At HB Global, our teams are made up of more than just employees. Every team member is an employee owner. With the opportunity to be an employee owner comes the ability to make a positive impact on our organization in addition to the monetary benefits.
Because of this, we expect that every employee owner has a growth and ownership mindset. The decisions you make and the actions you take on a daily basis ultimately impact the value that is created for the organization and what is shared back to you as an employee owner.
Thinking and behaving in a way that aligns with your responsibility as an employee owner requires balancing few different concepts, but it ultimately boils down to being a leader in your role.
When we create opportunity for leadership at every level of the organization, we open up more potential to increase the value we create and share at HB Global.
Balancing Team and Autonomy
Whether you realize it or not, one of the primary ways that you impact your community is through the work that you do. At HB Global, we are supporting the industries and people that move our country, and our world, forward.
This is true no matter what your role is at the company. Whether you’re in the field, in the office, or somewhere in between, your work is crucial to each project and assignment. You are here for a reason, and the purpose and significance of your work is bigger than just a task on your to-do list.
Regardless of your expertise, the work you do is critical to build the future for generations to come.
Furthermore, by fully committing to your work and your customers each day, you are creating value for the organization. This value is then shared back to you while also enabling us to expand who we serve to continue this positive momentum.
How to be an Everyday Leader
Leaders are required in all areas of our business, which means you don’t need to have a special title or office to be a positive influence.
We hire the most exceptional talent aligned with our culture, and so we trust and expect that every employee owner be a leader within their role.
You may be wondering how to do this if you feel you don’t have the authority to make certain decisions. But the truth is, being a leader doesn’t need to be (and frequently isn’t) big, bold acts. Rather, leadership is shown through consistency of doing the right thing each day.
Aiming to be just a little bit better each day compounds over time and yields significant results for you and your team.
While the list goes on and on, here are some examples of exemplary behaviors:
- Be accountable for results and outcomes
- Take responsibility for your actions and decisions
- Do the right thing and don’t make excuses
- Mentor the next generation
- Demonstrate your expertise but recognize when you don’t know it all
- Treat people with respect
- Honor your commitments
You likely already recognize that many of these behaviors directly tie to our core values. That’s no coincidence.
Simply by living out our core values each day, you are already positioning yourself as a leader within your team and sphere of influence. When you approach your work from a leadership mindset and align your behaviors with this mentality, you are likely to feel more fulfilled in your daily work.
Aligning Behavior with Purpose
Feeling more fulfilled in your daily work results from aligning your behaviors with a purpose. Behaving in a certain way because you feel like you “should” or to check a box won’t make your work any more fulfilling.
But if you can tie those behaviors to a purpose that drives you each day, that’s where you’ll start to feel that drive and passion that illuminates how meaningful our daily work is.
At HB Global, you aren’t just an employee; you’re an employee owner. By embracing this ownership mentality, you will recognize the importance of keeping our purpose at the forefront of your thoughts and actions in order to create value for both you and the organization.
What you feel your purpose is may vary depending on your role within the organization. For example, technicians are laser focused on taking care of their customer, project managers are devoted to organizing their teams and keeping them on track, and executives are focused on empowering and supporting employee owners.
Although the details of the daily focus may differ, we share a common purpose around the positive impact that we make on those around us, whether that’s community members, businesses, or employee owners and their families.
When we all align our behaviors towards this common purpose, we ultimately create value for our organization which is then shared back to employee owners. This allows us to amplify our individual and organizational impact even further.
As you can see, the concepts of Team and Autonomy do not need to contradict each other. By approaching both from a leadership mindset, you will exhibit behaviors that you help you grow and feel fulfilled while also supporting and contributing to your team.
